NBA Gains More Popularity
In the 1970s, the NBA was lacking publicity and national coverage. It wasn't as popular as other major professional sports leagues like the NFL, and MLB. It took an old rivalry to get more national attention. The 1980s were dominated by the Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers, and Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics. The rivalry and new commissioner, David Stern, were able to help make the NBA more popular than it ever was before.
